THE DARK SIDE OF KISSING

THE DARK SIDE OF KISSING:

I would like to draw your attention to the fact that kissing can be a wonderful experience, but it is important to know that certain infections and diseases can spread through saliva and direct contact. Below, I summarize the most common diseases that can be transmitted through kissing, along with risk factors, and provide some tips for prevention:

Infectious Diseases:

Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV-1 and HSV-2): Can cause frequent oral herpes, with the formation of painful blisters around the lips and mouth.
Human Papillomavirus (HPV): Certain types can cause tumors in the mouth and throat.
Mononucleosis (Epstein-Barr Virus): Also known as the “kissing disease,” it can cause fever, sore throat, and fatigue.
Cytomegalovirus (CMV): Common virus that can cause flu-like symptoms.
Influenza and Common Cold: Various types of viral respiratory infections.
Bacterial Infections:

Streptococcus mutans: One of the main causes of dental caries; therefore, maintaining adequate oral hygiene is extremely important.
Meningococcus: Causative agent of bacterial meningitis, which can spread through droplets of saliva.
Other Viral and Fungal Infections:

Mumps (Epidemic Parotitis): Causes painful swelling of the salivary glands and can be transmitted through kissing.
Hepatitis B Virus: Although primarily spread through blood and body fluids, it can also be transmitted through saliva, especially in the presence of open wounds.
Candida (Thrush): Fungal infection that can worsen in immunocompromised individuals.
Parasitic Infections and Other Risk Factors:

Amebiasis and Giardiasis: Less common parasitic intestinal infections that can be transmitted through oral contact.
Transmission of Allergens: Substances in the partner’s saliva can trigger allergic reactions.
Oral Hygiene: Regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups are crucial to reduce the risk of infections.
It is important to be cautious and maintain proper oral hygiene to minimize these risks. I recommend regular dental visits and considering your partner’s health status. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me so that we can discuss your individual needs and concerns in detail.
